In July 2005, one of Augusta's great educators (elementary and secondary), Mattie B. Burney, a member of Beulah Grove Baptist Church, entered into rest, but her legacy lives on. Mattie B. Burney who is more frequently referred to as "Ms. Mattie," was a dedicated educator in Richmond County area. She was a true advocate for creating opportunity for students to continue their education after high school. In her honor the Beulah Grove Community Resource Center created the Mattie B. Burney Scholarship. Some of Miss Burney's accomplishments include:
•T W Josey High School
•Graduate of Benedict College (BA)
•Member of Delta Sigma Theta
•National Association of University Women
•Rosa T. Beard Debutante Society
The mission of the Scholarship is to assist low to moderate income high school seniors and college freshmen from around the CSRA who have a 2.5 or better grade point average on their journey to a higher education. Miss Burney was an advocate for assisting students with funding who could not afford to attend college but desired to further their education.
In 2016, the Mattie B. Burney Scholarship became a part of the CSRA Outreach Endowment in an effort to secure more funding and provide more scholarships to deserving students. The scholarship was changed to provide opportunities to college freshmen and sophomores, instead of high school seniors. Students may apply for the scholarship February-April annually. Students who apply must attend the CSRA Outreach Scholarship banquet held in June annually.
Mattie B. Burney Golf Tournament- is held annually in July to raise funds for the Mattie B. Burney Scholarship.
